Day 1 of the Inca Trail: Wiñay Wayna - Machu Picchu
We pick you up from your hotel at 5.40 am (depending on train time) and take you to the train station. We travel by train, on a very picturesque route for 2 and a half hours until we reach kilometer 104 - the start of the Inca trail to Machu Picchu for us. From there, we have a walk of approximately 4 hours up to the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) (2680m/8792ft). We will join the path of the Inca Trail in time to see the most impressive sites on the whole Inca Trail to Machu Picchu!
We will then continue on to Inti Punku (Sun gate) (2730m/8792ft) from where you will have your first dramatic, panaromic view of Machu Picchu (2400m/7873ft). We will walk down the last part of the Inca trail towards the ancient Citadel of Machu Picchu itself. Before reaching Machu Picchu, we will take a side path off the Inca trail to go down to the town of Aguas Calientes; we will leave the visit to Machu Picchu and the grand tour for the next day. We will have dinner and rest.
Day 2 of the Inca Trail: Grand Tour of Machu Picchu - Huayna Picchu
We have breakfast and then take the first bus (6 am) up to Machu Picchu. We'll have the grand tour (about 2 hours) which will be given by our professional tour guide; after the explanation you will have some free tiem to explore more about the mysterious Sanctuary of Machu Picchu on your own. If you have energy you can also climb Huayna Picchu (2720m/8890ft)! (It is about a 45-minute walk to reach the top).
You will meet the guide in Aguas Calientes (it can be reached by bus or on foot) for lunch and then will get our train tickets to go back to Ollantaytambo and Cuzco. The train usually leaves between 2.30 pm and 6pm depending on Peru Rail allocations.
If desired, an extra night in Aguas Calientes can be arranged. This option is very popular as it allows more time to explore Machu Picchu and the town of Aguas Calientes. You can also go to the thermal springs in the town - a real treat after finishing the short Inca trail to Machu Picchu!
